Over the past year or so, the release of the Ryzen CPUs by AMD has ignited excitement throughout the PC community, offering users massive multithreaded power at an affordable cost. However, those CPUs have required large motherboards with large heatsinks. With the AORUS B450 I Pro Wi-Fi, AORUS thinks they’ve solved the issue, catering to the Mini-ITX form factor while still offering a feature-packed B450 chipset.

The Wi-Fi and Bluetooth system is built-in and provides full connectivity. The board consists of high quality, long-lasting materials. Since the size is small and compact, it is great for a small space. It also has robust USB and HDMI ports. Certainly, multiple displays are supported.

It’s the best option if you are on a budget. While the B450 I Aorus Pro Wi-Fi is probably not your best choice if you’re searching for a platform for a high-end overclocked gaming rig. Using an eight-core CPU, it fails when overclocked, at least when all cores are loaded, and the lack of fan headers means that it is not targeted for a high-end PC. We’re hesitant to ignore it entirely, however.

For a simple air-cooled PC, the fan headers will be enough, and you also get several features for the cash. The board will probably shine, even if overclocked, paired with an AMD APU, and, of course, if you’re not overclocking, throttling won’t be a problem whatever Processor you use. More airflow around the VRMs would possibly also be seen by using one of AMD’s reference coolers.

I feel the characteristics and performance you can draw from the Aorus Pro WIFI are really good at around 119 bucks. A 4 + 2 step layout may be argued, but it is properly shielded by a heatsink, and let’s be frank here, B450 is not a super intense overclocking platform. The mini ITX form factor helps you to create a very small compact PC with a lot of performance and features.

MSI X370 Pro Carbon

For a few reasons, MSI’s board is one of the most striking ones I’ve seen. It appears darker than others with its carbon-fiber PCB, heatsinks and IO shroud, but it contrasts greatly with the RGB LEDs and polished steel slots that come into focus.

Behind the top-right corner of the board, several RGB LEDs are found, running through the audio circuitry and slashing dramatically through the heatsinks. These slashes make the lighting stand out, and 16.7 million colors and various patterns are subject to the normal customization of the illuminations, with CPU temperature recording also accessible. There’s even a single header to hook a light-strip up and synchronize it with the RGB configuration of the motherboard.

In every way, the MSI X370 GAMING PRO CARBON is a mid to high-end X370 motherboard. It’s a really perfect buy for anyone who seeks a high-end Ryzen experience at a reasonable cost, from its aesthetics to its functionality. My only concern with the motherboard is its performance of VRM and lack of OC features; in this price bracket, I expected slightly more. The VRM gets the job done, long story short, and does not obstruct overall overclocking capabilities.

It was super easy to overclock the memory, and you would be able to get the kit up to 3400 very quickly.

We didn’t expect to find six fan headers onboard, given the price of the motherboard. MSI tried adding in the headers and all of them are hybrid!

The Tomahawk has outstanding aesthetics, and the grey heat sinks on the motherboard really look high-end, and the silkscreen matte black PCB makes the mobo look sturdy.

2You can’t expect too much in terms of VRMs for $120, but MSI did well in this case, especially compared to some of the other motherboards tested in this price range.

Without a CPU enabled, the motherboard is capable of flashing the BIOS, enabling you to recover from a bad BIOS flash or corruption.

The MSI B450 Tomahawk is really a very impressive motherboard for a motherboard that comes in just under $150. It has a very color-neutral design in this price segment, which adds a lot of value. In order to reduce the VRM temperature while covering up part of the rear IO panel, the large VRM heat sink seems to be very effective.

In this price range, the USB BIOS recovery function is not common on motherboards. This would not only keep things safe, but it will also allow you to upgrade to future CPUs without requiring to flash the BIOS with an older one to retain compatibility. The Gigabyte B450M DS3H is the second cheapest B450 motherboard at the moment with a price tag under $100 and seems to fall into the category for those looking for an affordable Ryzen board.

The biggest chunk of the aesthetic prowess of the board comes from the PCB, which has a black base with a grey striped circuit-like pattern that emanates from the board’s corners towards the socket.

There are two full-length PCIe slots in this entry-level offering; the top slot is PCIe 3.0 x16 while the bottom slot is PCIe 2.0 x4. A single PCIe 2.0 x1 slot sits in between the two full-length slots. This means that AMD CrossFire multi-graphics card configurations are allowed thanks to the two full-length slots, although it should be noted that NVIDIA SLI is not allowed across the B450 chipset; this is due to PCI bandwidth limitations.

The B450 M DS3H has four memory slots capable of supporting DDR4-3200 memory, like all of the GIGABYTE launch day range of B450 motherboards. This means that with both ECC and non-ECC Un-buffered memory types being provided, a total of 64 GB of device memory can be installed. Support for DDR4 memory with built-in XMP profiles also exists.

Not so much a problem with a discrete graphics card, but if a user wants to use one of the Ryzen 2000 series APUs and overclock them for better performance, it may cause possible heat problems.

The GIGABYTE B450 M DS3H’s crux comes in the value way ($71.99), but without losing key features that are widely used on most home systems. The Realtek ALC887, which is a more cost-effective audio codec versus the ALC1220, offers the B450 M DS3H more versatility. It also adds value over the style, with its own B450 Aorus Pro / Aorus Pro WIFI models, and with a cheaper Realtek GbE networking chip, as compared to the Intel I211-AT.

The ROG Strix board has all the main features of a strong gaming rig that you might like. Steel-supported, the top two PCI-E x16 slots can accommodate two Nvidia cards and three AMD cards, a complement that suits pricier boards.

As rivals, the memory slots will accommodate the same 64 GB of DDR4 memory (you get two M.2 slots), with one covered on the Southbridge heatsink by an extension. Bear in mind, however, that the faster NVMe interface is currently supported by only one of those connectors; the second relies on slower SATA connectivity.

You’ll get one RGB AURA header; two RGB LED headers, and three more connectors for your fan. There are also two connecting jumpers for the water-cooling kit. It’s a solid health bill and will prove suitable for the vast majority of computers, but more is provided here by the pricier Asus board. The ASRock has fewer connectors for lighting.

Design-wise, if a little subdued, the X470-F looks fine. The heatsink and I / O shielding are larger than in the crosshair board and are less lavish.   Only this one has RGB LEDs too – the heatsink below is smart and compact, but it does not have light.

The high efficiency, large range of features, and lower price mean that I prefer this board to the ASRock. If you want a high-end specification without the enthusiast characteristics, it’s a decent choice, which would ultimately only be used by a handful of people.

Strong gaming efficiency and a good specification are served by the Asus ROG Strix board, and it is cheaper than its main competitor. Performance freaks should remember that, though, it’s not always the fastest board around.

Through rigorous testing during development, the premium quality is ensured. In the VR case, the strong elements and rock-solid results render you absolutely immersive. Without any compatibility concerns, users may be confident of enjoying VR pleasures.

Although the potential of my Ryzen 7 2700X is negligible, the ASRock AB350 M Pro4 also provides some moderate overclocking potential. At the same voltage on the ASRock AB350 M Pro4, I was able to achieve the same clock as with the Taichi Ultimate. When I attempted to overclock my RAM, the difference in features became more apparent.

The ASRock AB350 M Pro4 only supports XMP profiles, and it was not able to accommodate my G.SKILL kit’s 3866 MHz, like most boards. Some boards, but not the ASRock AB350 M Pro4, give an XMP profile equal to their maximum supported clock speed.

Storage support and I / O offerings are also minimal, but given the price point of the ASRock AB350 M Pro4, that should be no surprise. In particular, audio accessibility is highly limited, although the RightMark benchmark performance was pretty good. Even, the ASRock AB350 M Pro4 does not have a single RGB LED on it, which for some would be a plus. It has an RGB header, so RGB enthusiasts were not totally left out in the rain.

For your shiny new Ryzen 7 2700x CPU, ASUS’ ROG Crosshair VI Extreme (AMD X370) is a feature-packed motherboard to consider.

Since the original model launched back in the AM2 socket era, the ASUS ROG Crosshair series is ASUS’s best offering for AMD motherboards. Since then, ASUS has enhanced the design and functionality of its Crosshair motherboards for every generation. ASUS brings the X370 chipset-based Crosshair VI Hero with AMD Ryzen lunch, delivering excellent performance and feature set at a reasonable price.

The very first thing you can note about the Crosshair VI Extreme is that it is a horizontally mounted ATX 24 pin power connector and an extended ATX form factor. Other than the Crosshair VI Serious, all sections are beefed up to the next level with a similar design to the Crosshair VI Hero.

A 12 phase VRM configuration operated by one 8-pin and one 4-pin EPS connector is featured in the Crosshair VI Extreme. At the top, we can see that both the CPU and radiator fan headers were supplied by ASUS as a collective to facilitate with cable management. The Crosshair VI Extreme also supports an RGB monoblock that has a designated header at the top (WB-SENSOR) to monitor the lighting and flow detection of both blocks. The main 4-pin RGB header is right next to it.

This motherboard does have a lot of compelling features. The motherboard has dual M.2 mounts, and for one of them there is an M.2 PCH heatsink, enabling you to squeeze more output in heavy use.

I have to admit that this motherboard is what I like; it has a lot of cool features that are very attractive to the X370 platform and anyone looking to invest in Ryzen. The big issue for this motherboard right now is that X299 is going strong, Z370 is around, and when it comes to outright results, some of the other X370 boards on the market are a little quicker. If you can pick this board up at the right price, however, and it’s mostly a workhorse for productivity, content development such as game streaming, it will be a great addition to your build.
